RALEIGH’S HILLSIDE FARM SEEKS THREE WORKER SHARES!

Raleigh’s Hillside Farm is pleased to announce that we have three openings for worker share positions on our farm this season! This is a great opportunity to learn more about what goes into a vegetable farming operation, hang out with your favorite farmers, and enjoy free veggies for your time!

Worker shares are required to complete a set amount of hours each week throughout the 20 week CSA growing season in exchange for their CSA share. The weekly hour commitment is 5 hours per week for full shares or 3 hours per week for half shares (or every-other-week half shares). You will commit to a work schedule with us prior to the season. We know how hectic summer can get, so worker shares may miss two weeks during the growing season without penalty. However, the earlier you can let us know what weeks you won’t be available, the better! We do also allow worker shares to begin working once per week prior to the season so that they have the option to finish early.

For 2016, we are hoping to find worker shares with Tuesday availability (our CSA harvest day) but can be flexible so long as you can find a regularly scheduled weekly time to come out to the farm during the week. Sorry, no weekend positions available!

Possible worker share tasks include seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, packing CSA boxes and/or other farm maintenance. We require a two-hour “working interview” in the spring to make sure you are a good fit for our farm.

Raleigh’s Hillside Farm is located 40 minutes south of Madison (10 minutes south of Evansville).

E-mail us at raleighshillsidefarm@gmail.com if you are interested!

Now Taking Spring Seedling Orders!!

We are very happy to share that this spring we will have beautiful, healthy seedlings for sale for your home garden in the spring.

If you love to garden but don’t have the infrastructure to start your own seedlings, it can be very frustrating to find the varieities of vegetables you want to grow. Purchasing starts from a greenhouse can also be difficult for folks trying to buy pesticide-free or organic vegetable transplants for their garden. Or if you wait too long, all that can be left are weak little plants that you need to save before even transplanting them.

We are excited to offer an alternative. This spring we will be selling tomatoes, peppers, brassicas, lettuce, eggplants and herbs seedlings. The same plants and varieties we also grow for ourselves so you know they will be treated with love! For orders of $20 or more we will even arrange a delivery so you have your vegetable seedlings when you need them!

Please order through this form and feel free to call 608.451.2467 or e-mail raleighshillsidefarm@gmail.com with any questions!!

Orders due by April 12th! Deliveries late April through June.

You won’t find any more recipes here because….

…I’ve started a new blog!!!!!

It’s called The Leek & The Carrot.  It’s all about me and Kyle and our farm and our lives together and sometimes my life separately and sometimes nothing at all.

Our farm blog has always been lacking because I hate the format on this website.  Our farm website is perfect and beautiful for everything in life except blogging.  Plus I love the farm, but sometimes I have things to talk about that have nothing to do with farming, like adventures in New Glarus (or Milwaukee or Chicago or hopefully around the world) or our dogs or the ridiculousness of everything.

So from now on, check out The Leek & The Carrot for recipes, silly links, farm-related ramblings, and totally non-farm-related ramblings.

White Bean & Frisee Soup

I know, I know.  No one wants to eat soup when its hot outside.  Well I don’t care.  And you won’t either.  Because this soup makes an absolutely perfect summer meal.  It’s spicy and light and quick and easy and a great place to throw those pesky summer greens that your CSA farmer keeps giving you because its not quite tomato and squash season yet.  What’s not to love?  Use Cajun Dream Andouille Sausage if you live near Metcalfe’s.  You’ll fall in love and start wanting to use it EVERYTHING.

White Bean & Friseé Soup

I created this soup to use up a head of friseé I wasn’t sure what to do with, but any hearty green will do.  Chard, kale, and beet greens would all work great.  Members of the endive family (escarole, friseé, etc) hold up especially well in soups.  Also if you are trying to only use CSA box items, feel free to leave out the carrots and celery.  I just can’t bring myself to make soup without these things and always have them in my fridge, but they are not essential to the end product.

Takes 45 minutes
Makes 6 servings

2 tablespoons butter
2 carrots, diced, optional
1 celery rib, diced, optional
1 spring onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
8 cups chicken stock, or 8 cups water and 3 tablespoons chicken bouillon
2 cans cannellini beans, rinsed
1 head friseé, or other green, rinsed and cut into bite-size pieces
2 bay leaves
2 Andouille sausages, sliced, or other sausages of your liking (I just love spicy sausage in a white bean soup; leave it out altogether if your vegetarian and just sub a few drops of hot sauce)
½ cup dry pasta, optional
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Melt butter in a large stock pot over medium high heat.  Add carrots, celery and onion to pot.  Cook for five minutes until soft.  Add olive oil and garlic.  Cook five minutes longer until garlic is very fragrant.
Add stock, beans, friseé and bay leaves.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce to a simmer and look for 10 minutes until the greens are wilted.
Add the sausage and pasta.  Simmer for ten minutes longer.  Add salt and pepper to taste, though my soup didn’t need any extra enhancements.  Spicy Andouille sausage and chicken stock are a match made in heaven.
Eat immediately or store in the fridge and eat in the next three days.

First Farm Work Day of the Season!

We are so excited to finally be hosting our first farm work day of the season!!  These days spent out in the field with friends are easily some of our favorite memories of the entire summer.

field 2

So join us this Saturday (May 24) from 1PM to 6PM!

We will be planting potatoes, seeding beans and radishes, transplanting radicchio, arugula and lettuce, weeding like crazy and maybe even putting up a pea trellis.  The more the merrier.  It’s a chaotic time on the farm and more hands makes very light work.

At 6PM, we will prepare a small dinner with seasonal favorites (asparagus, mushrooms & rhubarb), drink good beer and celebrate the true start of spring!  There will also be free asparagus for all who come to help!

field

Please e-mail by Friday night so I know how much food to make.  raleighshillsidefarm@gmail.com
